“Now, why do you suppose Del didn’t tell Galen right off he could do her working drawings for her?” Nancy asked Rod, grabbing sixteen-month-old Kelsey and plopping her up onto the changing table to get her jammies on. At the other end of the room, Rod tussled with a giggling Quinn, Kelsey’s twin brother, trying to match limbs to corresponding openings in a red blanket sleeper. From down the hall, clashing CD’s fought it out from Hannah’s and Schuy’s rooms, punctuated by the occasional, “Turn that down, dweeb!”

Nancy zipped up Kelsey’s sleeper, then drew her up into her arms for a hug. God, she’d waited a long time for this. But damned if it wasn’t worth every agonizing, frustrating, lonely minute it had taken to get here.

“Maybe he wanted to make sure she had her ideas in order first?” Rod said over their son’s infectious laughter, flying him into his crib as Nancy did the same to Kelsey on her side of the room. “And maybe that brain of yours is wandering into territory that’s none of its business?”

Nancy made a face at him as they passed each other to give kisses to the other’s baby. A thousand “nite-nites” duly dispensed, Rod slipped his arm around Nancy’s shoulders as they left the room, waiting for a moment to make sure the babies stayed quiet. Then, hands linked, they walked down to the family room, collapsing onto the sofa in front of the fireplace.

“She’d be perfect for him,” she said.

“You don’t know that. So stay out of it.”

Unfazed, Nancy snuggled up to her husband, watching the fire writhe and leap in front of her. “She could use a little sprucing up, though, don’t you think?”

Rod’s chuckle tickled her ear. “Okay, I’m probably going to regret saying this, but…”

She hoisted herself up, frowning. “But what?”

“But if the way Del was looking at Galen at Thanksgiving was any indication, I don’t think he thinks she needs a drop of ‘sprucing up’, as you put it.”

With a smug little grin of her own, Nancy snuggled back against her husband’s chest. Just wait until she told Elizabeth this.
